Fashion Shootout
22 Jun 2011
Every now and then, I get to do something completely different. The Makeup School is renowned for professional TV/Film/Special FX hair and makeup school located in the inner streets of Ponsonby Auckland.
The brief this time is simple and to the point, the fashion class is having its final hair and makeup exam, and I get invited to shoot each students portfolio and it will get uploaded to their server and will be marked by a guest judge in New Zealand. There were around 20 models to shoot, and some of them are from reputable modeling agencies such as Red 11, Clyne etc.
This is not the first time I have been shooting for them, as the makeup studio is located next to a warehouse with a offloading bay for trucks, rather then getting them to stand against a boring plain white wall which has been done over and over again, I have setup my lights so I use the big opened garage door as a backdrop, the weather was excellent on the day of the shoot with sun blasting into the garage openings which created a perfect backlit backdrop.
The lighting setup is fairly straight forward, on camera left, the key light consists of a beauty dish mounted on a boom directing light straight onto the models face, with another softbox underneath it which provided a good fill for the rest of the body, on camera right, another small powered strobe mounted on a reflective umbrella which helps to fill in just enough shadows which still gave the image enough contrast. A bare speedlite was hung from the ceiling behind the ceiling to provide extra kick to emphasis the backlit garage.
Below are some of my shots of my favorite models. Thanks for viewing.
